One of the (very few) drawbacks
of always being right is that sometimes it takes a little while to form
the correct opinion. Here at The Factual, we admit to taking our
sweet time on weighing in on critical arguments. You may have
noticed that it took us 24 years to decide on our favorite albums of
1983, and we're still not exactly sure what our top five are. On the other hand, it baffles us that so many people (everyone,
actually) like to critique The Year In Music before said year is actually
over. For one thing, everybody was so busy falling over each other
trying to be the first to name Sound of Silver album of the year (Stylus
Magazine did it in October, people) that nobody pays attention to the
things that get released in the last couple months of the year.
Then you get artists like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Peter Bjorn, showing up on the Best of 2007 lists when they totally came
out in 2006.
We call bullshit.
Here at The Factual Opinion,
we know it means little to be first if you’re no also right, and we
like to be right. We’re very good at it. This year, we
sat back and let everyone scramble to meet their meaningless little
deadlines, so that we could get a little perspective on 2007: The Year
That Was. That way we weren’t so caught up in ourselves we lost
sight of what’s actually, you know, good. Over the next couple
of weeks, we’ll be taking a look back on our favorite music of last
year—in countdown form, naturally. We’re going to big-up a
bunch of music we know the other lists have missed—because, shit,
we read them all—and hopefully remind you how great some of your favorites
are. Pay attention, because post-holiday winter time is definitely
the right time to listen to music, new and old. And you know how
much we like to be right.
The schedule goes something like this--non-stop updates, starting...well, fuck it. Starting now.
