While Marty threatens to return, I figured I'd grab his spot, dust it off, and toss up a couple of things I've been liking (and a couple of things I think are ridiculous, but in different ways), before he shows up and tells me why I'm wrong.
Kreidler "New Earth" from their album, Tank
I have a tendency to refer to certain types of music as sounding "kind of like Goblin", this should be taken to mean that I just happen to like it, not necessarily that it sounds like Goblin, although some of this quite accurately does. The rest of Tank hasn't grabbed ahold of me the way it seems to have grabbed ahold of most of the people who have heard it, but this track has burned a hole in my retinas. Like the sun!
Deftones "No Ordinary Love" from their covers album, aptly titled Covers
I don't have a problem with covers albums, I just think they're kind of silly things to release. Covers always strike me as a fun thing to hear at the end of a concert, but the idea of recording full albums of the things seems like overkill. Did you ever hear that version of "Maggie's Farm" that Rage Against The Machine did? That was pretty funny shit, even by Rage Against The Machine standards, which are the funniest of standards (as an adult, Rage is really only useful as an accelerant to help you set a new push-up max). "NO I AINT GONNA WORK ON MAGGIES FARM NO MORE"...I guess you had to be there. It's probably better you weren't.
Anyway: Deftones doing Sade! You'd think this would be a lot funnier than it is, especially because it's not funny at all, not even for a second. It feels like somebody's trying to be funny, but doesn't know how. Why they chose this over "Smooth Operator", only God knows.
Mark McGuire "The Marfa Lights", originally a cassette/CD-R only release from '08, now available on A Young Person's Guide To Mark McGuire
I love this album, and I love loop manipulation, I love this kind of guitar work, and I love the usage of the name Marfa, because Marfa seems like it's going to be able to maintain it's art city legacy in a way that you just know Portland is going to fail to pull off, because Portland can't let go of being politically active. (Marfa's too busy sculpting to debate about skateparks.) This is (maybe) the best track on this beast of a compilation, so if this ain't your skeez--Nina despises this kind of stuff, her take on this song was that it was "complete nonsense"--then don't bother. But otherwise, I give this my highest rating. I don't know what that highest rating is, but I felt like I should say something like that.
Obits "Naked To The World", from their album Moody, Standard & Poor
A rec' from a friend, this is a band I know next to nothing about. At first, I knew nothing, so I went to Brooklyn Vegan and was reminded why I never go to that website, because jesus christ shut up, shut up, that sites comments section make me horny for the kind of discourse you see on a Fox News article about where Obama was born. Obits: they seem like a good band, they made a pretty solid garage-y album...I'm probably going to move onto another version of this exact same sound in another week or two, but for now, this is the name of the current baron of the realm.
Hunx and His Punx "He's Comign Back", from their album Too Young To Be In Love
I bet you gotta see this crew live for it to really operate on your sinuses. I like to imagine those girls on back-up are totally standing on a little riser with beehive hairdos.
The Black Angels "Manipulation", from one of the 17 eps they've put out in the past year, the Angels are basically the Yellow Swans/Wolf Eyes of the pseudo-Velvet Underground psychedelic junkie set
Favorite band right now, until Gloss Drop shows up? Probably.
-Tucker Stone, 2011
So is he coming or comign back? Misspelling or misspelling of intentional misspelling? Songs can have funny names.
