On this episode of Comic Books Are Burning In Hell, Tucker, Matt, Joe & Chris are discussing one book (or one series of books), Ganges, by Kevin Huizenga. Over the course of the series, all four of us have written about Kevin's work, and if you'd like to check those pieces out, they are linked below:
Matt Seneca on a sequence from Ganges 2, at Comic Book Resources.
Joe McCulloch on Or Else 2, at Comic Book Galaxy. (If you've got a copy of the Drawn & Quarterly Anniversary book, you can find even more about Kevin from Joe.)
Chris Mautner interviewed Kevin about Ganges for Comic Book Resources.
Chris also wrote a Comics College introduction to Kevin's work for Comic Book Resources.
Chris first wrote about Kevin in this 2006 piece on Curses, for Panels & Pixels.
Tucker Stone on Ganges 4 for his Best of 2011 list, at Comixology.
Tucker also spoke with Tom Spurgeon about Ganges for The Comics Reporter.
Tucker wrote about "The Groceries" for The Savage Critic.
Tucker also wrote about Ganges 4 at Flavorwire.
Tucker wrote about Ganges 2 for this site, a long time ago.
Thanks for listening!
Thanks, this was really good.
You guys touched on this but it's fascinating how many of the key themes in Ganges are present, if perhaps less developed, in Gloriana and Wild Kingdom. Gloriana has the expansion and unfurling of a single moment (Ganges 6 but also the infinite grid of Ganges 4) and the interest in explaining scientific phenomena visually (Ganges 5), while Wild Kingdom has Internet-era consumerism (Hot New Thing) and humor. I think Huizenga's sense of humor is one of his under-discussed but very important qualities.
Of course many people touch on key interests again and again but the original Gloriana came out when Huizenga was 24...most haven't found a fruitful direction as an artist that early on.
