Glad to hear your discussion on You Were Never Really Here.

FWIW, I noticed that it's only after Nina watched Joe hammer that guy to death during his first rescue that she then found the courage to switchblade her abuser to death. Fighting back is something Joe's mom never did, though I think we're meant to assume Joe did take out his dad, from that very brief flashback of his feet walking on the second floor of the house, hammer in hand. So, Joe has taught the next generation an important lesson: the world is awful and you can't just hide in a closet from it, or count your way down until it's over; you need to rise up and destroy it before it destroys you. That's why he cries, because what a sad lesson.

I find this movie is actually holding up rather well after my initial response to it.
